Cork-based entrepreneur Jim Mulcahy has developed a virtual reality training tool to improve recycling education across Ireland with support from the Nimbus Research Centre at Munster Technological University (MTU).
The app, Enviro-Bin-Aware, uses short, game-style challenges to teach households and organisations how to sort waste correctly and reduce contamination rates.
The project operates through ENTIRE, the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) that helps organisations adopt emerging technologies. MTU provided technical support, helping Envir-Aware Ltd transform the initial concept into a fully functioning VR platform.
Mulcahy identified widespread confusion caused by inconsistent bin colours and labels across Ireland. For example, at his own home, burgundy bins are used for recycling while green bins are for general waste, which is the reverse of the national MyWaste scheme. Enviro-Bin-Aware aims to standardise recycling knowledge and create measurable improvements in waste sorting practices.
Pilot demonstrations have already attracted interest from a large Cork-based multinational and Cork County Libraries, showing the tool’s potential beyond individual households. Brian Cahill, Nimbus EI TEC Gateway Manager, noted that ENTIRE’s scoping, prototyping, and pilot support enabled rapid development, mitigating the risks often associated with digital innovation projects.
ENTIRE support is provided within a defined funding window, and eligible SMEs receive assistance under de minimis rules, while public sector bodies can access fully subsidised aid. The initiative is fully funded by Enterprise Ireland and led by the Tyndall National Institute, in partnership with Walton Institute, MTU, University College Cork, and Skillnet Ireland.
Envir-Aware Ltd’s VR platform represents a step forward in using immersive technology for practical educational purposes, addressing operational inefficiencies while offering new business opportunities for digital solutions in environmental education.
