Tes has launched Timetable 2.0 Essentials, a cloud-based AI-assisted timetabling platform for primary and secondary schools, automating the production of school timetables from imported management information system data and providing collaborative, cloud-accessible planning tools for leadership teams.
Tes Global is a Sheffield-based education technology company, acquired by Toronto-headquartered Onex Corporation in 2019 and having raised $1.04 billion in total funding. Estimated annual revenue stands at approximately $264.2 million (€242 million), with approximately 2,533 employees globally. Tes supports more than 14 million educators worldwide across school software including timetabling, SEND provision, behaviour management, recruitment and professional development, alongside its education publishing and teacher resources marketplace.
The structural driver is a specific operational vulnerability that school timetabling creates in UK and Irish schools. Timetabling is one of the most complex annual administrative tasks a school undertakes, combining staffing constraints, curriculum requirements, room availability and SEN provision across hundreds of variables.
The critical issue is not complexity but concentration: when timetabling knowledge and associated spreadsheets sit with a single experienced administrator, any change in that person's availability creates a systemic operational risk at the start of the academic year. Tes Timetable 2.0 resolves both problems simultaneously: AI-assisted automation reduces the complexity burden, while cloud-based collaborative workflow distributes the institutional knowledge across multiple team members and a persistent digital record. The platform imports school data directly from management information systems and produces a working timetable in hours rather than the days typically required through manual processes.
The integrated cover management feature, scheduling support teachers and teaching assistants, notifying staff of changes and managing last-minute cover, extends the product's value proposition beyond annual timetabling into daily operational management, increasing product stickiness and switching costs once a school has migrated its data into the system.
For the sector, Tes already holds significant market presence in Irish schools through its recruitment and professional development services, giving Timetable 2.0 an established distribution channel into Irish school leadership teams without requiring cold-start business development.
