Professor Michael Peter Kennedy has been named recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award Leader 2026 at the Education Awards 2026, recognised for a distinguished career spanning microelectronics research, engineering education, and academic leadership across some of Ireland's most prominent universities.
A Professor of Microelectronic Engineering, Kennedy has built a body of work that bridges fundamental research and real-world application. His output across nonlinear circuits, neural networks, and signal processing has produced more than 400 publications and multiple patents.
This record reflects both the depth of his technical expertise and a sustained commitment to research that carries practical consequence.
Elected as a Fellow of IEEE and the recipient of numerous international honours, his standing within the global engineering community is well established. But his influence extends beyond personal recognition.
The founding of key national research centres, combined with active industry consultancy and commercialisation work, points to a researcher who has consistently sought to translate academic output into tangible sector impact.
At institutional level, Kennedy has contributed to shaping how engineering education is structured and resourced within Irish higher education — a quieter but enduring form of influence that has benefited generations of students and researchers working within the fields he helped develop.
His recognition as Outstanding Contribution Award Leader 2026 reflects a career defined by consistent excellence across research, education, and industry engagement.
The Education Awards 2026 ceremony took place last 16 April at the Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath.
