US-based AI company OpenAI has added a four-video training collection for journalists and news organisations to its OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, providing practical lessons on using ChatGPT in daily newsroom work without requiring a technical background, as reported by Edtech Innovation Hub.
The ChatGPT 101 for Journalists collection was published between 7 and 13 July 2026 and is presented by Evan Hirsch. It sits inside a learning community listed with 1,409 members, serving editorial, business, product and technology teams across news media organisations.
The collection includes Build Your Own Assignment Editor, Power Prompting, Upskill With Skills and Skills vs. Agents. Each video focuses on practical newsroom applications rather than general AI awareness, with a consistent emphasis on human editorial oversight, approved inputs and defined workflow boundaries.
Build Your Own Assignment Editor shows how a Workspace Agent can review approved sources such as a calendar, inbox, Slack or Teams channel and documents, then generate a short morning brief to help journalists organise deadlines, meetings and focus time. The workflow is designed around planning support rather than autonomous action, with users instructed to define what the agent should not do.
Power Prompting applies structured prompt design to a city council agenda item, demonstrating how a weak prompt can be rebuilt into a clearer reporting instruction covering role, task, context, output, limits and verification steps. The video also covers asking ChatGPT to identify uncertainty, missing facts and possible next reporting steps.
Upskill With Skills explains how a ChatGPT Skill can capture a recurring editorial process and return a consistent output, with examples including agenda scans, public record reviews, source follow-up lists and editor prep packets. Human verification is built into the workflow design.
Skills vs. Agents draws a distinction between a reusable process template and the workflow that can apply it at scale, covering how to design an Agent with a defined beat, job scope and limits while preserving source links, dates and human review.
The wider OpenAI Academy for News Organizations section includes media case studies from publishers including India Today, Hearst Newspapers, DMG Media and El Comercio, covering AI use across editorial, audience, commercial and operational functions.
