The Irish Government has published a Digital and AI Strategy to 2030, establishing a national AI office and comprehensive skills development framework. The strategy addresses workforce capability, regulatory infrastructure and technology adoption to position Ireland for AI-driven economic growth.
EdTech Innovation Hub reports that the strategy includes commitments to national skilling initiatives, regulatory clarity and public sector digital transformation. The government aims to coordinate AI development across education, enterprise and public services through centralised oversight and policy coordination.
The newly established AI office will provide strategic direction, coordinate cross-departmental initiatives and engage with international regulatory frameworks including the European Union's AI Act. The office will work with education providers, industry stakeholders and research institutions to align national AI development with economic and social objectives.
The strategy's skills component targets education system reform, workforce upskilling and lifelong learning pathways to build AI literacy and technical capability. The government identified skills development as critical to enabling widespread AI adoption across Irish businesses and public sector organisations.
Specific commitments include integration of digital and AI competencies into primary and secondary curricula, expansion of higher education programmes in AI-related disciplines, and establishment of reskilling pathways for workers transitioning into technology-enabled roles.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment previously set an ambition for 75 per cent of Irish businesses to use AI, cloud computing and big data by 2030. The new strategy provides implementation mechanisms to support this target through coordinated investment, regulation and capability building.
The government stated that Ireland's position as a European technology hub creates both opportunity and obligation to lead in responsible AI adoption. The strategy emphasises ethical frameworks, transparency requirements and human rights protections alongside economic development objectives.
