South Korean institution Gyeongbok University Construction Education Center has launched a specialised training programme in serious accident management practice, targeting construction technicians across all job positions, grades and fields of expertise, as reported by The Asia Business Daily.
The 35-hour programme, delivered through a combination of remote and in-person sessions, is designed to help on-site technicians understand the legal complexities of South Korea's Serious Accident Punishment Act and apply post-incident response measures directly to workplace settings.
The curriculum covers the fundamentals of relevant legislation, case precedents, safety management checklists and accident case analyses, with a focus on minimising on-site risks. Key training areas include the establishment of safety and health management systems, response measures to the Serious Accident Punishment Act, construction project safety management and the management of construction types with frequent serious accident exposure, including reinforced earth retaining walls.
The programme was developed in collaboration with a dedicated legal team from HwaWoo Law Firm, integrating practical legal expertise into the training content.
Sangyun Park, Director of the Gyeongbok University Construction Education Center, said the programme responds to a heightened sense of urgency across the industry. "As shown in recent cases of serious accidents, overlooking minor warning signs or insufficient safety measures can lead to irreversible serious accidents," he said. "This program will clearly convey the nine key items and post-incident response processes that management and on-site supervisors must implement. It will serve as an opportunity to strengthen practical legal risk defense capabilities."
