Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has launched the Southeast Higher Education/Further Education/Industry Cross-Border Alliance (SECBA) project, a PEACEPLUS-supported initiative running until October 2028.
The programme spans the south-east region of Northern Ireland and Ireland’s border counties, creating a structured platform for collaboration between higher education, further education, and industry.
The launch event featured key speakers including DkIT President Dr Diarmuid O’Callaghan, SEUPB Programme Manager Geraldine McKenna, Deputy Erin McGreehan T.D., and Richard Kirk, CEO of Workplus. Dr Caoimhe Archibald, Northern Ireland’s Minister for the Economy, addressed participants via video, emphasising cross-border cooperation and regional development.
Panel discussions highlighted the programme’s potential impact on learners, employers, and communities. Professor Fergal McCaffrey (Head of School of Informatics & Creative Arts, DkIT), Louise Clarke (Deputy Director, Cavan Institute), Martina Rooney (Director, Monaghan Institute), and Tracy Rice (Head of Business Engagement, Southern Regional College) explored benefits for workforce readiness, cross-border engagement, and long-term skills development.
SECBA integrates industry input into academic programmes, supporting practical learning and regional employment needs. By combining expertise from multiple institutions and sectors, the initiative aims to enhance employability, create new pathways for learners, and strengthen cross-border educational ties.
The project also seeks to leave a lasting legacy beyond its completion in 2028, providing a blueprint for future cross-jurisdictional collaboration in education and skills development.
