Revisiting one of the standout victories from this year's programme, Certified Irish Angus has been named winner of the Best Student Experience Award at the Education Awards 2026, recently recognised for a schools competition that connects second-level students with Ireland's agri-food sector through a rich, hands-on programme that goes well beyond the classroom to deliver career insight, industry connection, and memorable personal development experiences.
The programme's design is deliberately immersive. Students rear Angus calves, complete a formal interview process, attend a national finals event at Croke Park, and participate in learning experiences both in Ireland and abroad, creating a student journey that combines agricultural education with real-world skills development and genuine social enrichment. That combination of vocational relevance and experiential breadth is what gives the initiative its distinctive character.
Its inclusivity is equally notable. By accommodating both urban and rural students, the programme ensures that access to agri-food education and the career pathways it opens is not limited to those already connected to farming, broadening the pipeline of talent entering the sector and challenging assumptions about who belongs in Irish agriculture.
Judges were clear on what set the submission apart. "This entrant presented an engaging initiative that proactively connects future farmers to the sector, offering an excellent student experience across Ireland. The programme stands out for its inclusivity, accommodating both urban and rural students, and offering opportunities for social activities, international travel, and connections with local agri-food industries. With a clear, well-structured application, it demonstrates a strong commitment to enriching the student experience and fostering the next generation of farmers," the panel stated.
As one of the Education Awards categories, the Best Student Experience Award recognises Irish education institutions and organisations that have provided outstanding student experiences, assessed across programme design, career development, social enrichment, industry exposure, and the degree to which the organisation has gone beyond curricular requirements to facilitate its students.
The Education Awards 2026 gala took place on 16 April at the Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath.
