Acknowledged for outstanding innovation throughout 2025, Atlantic Technological University's School of Engineering secured the Best Community Academic Collaboration award at the Education Awards 2025 for its Civic Engagement initiative, recognised for effectively bridging the divide between higher education and local communities through accessible, inclusive STEM outreach.
The initiative brought practical engineering education directly to young people across the region, creating pathways for students who might not otherwise consider higher education. Through hands-on workshops, school partnerships, and community events, ATU Engineering demonstrated how academic institutions can become catalysts for social mobility while addressing the sector's persistent challenge of widening participation in STEM disciplines.
The judges praised ATU Engineering's structured approach and measurable community impact. "ATU Engineering's submission demonstrates a well-organised and impactful initiative that effectively bridges the gap between academia and the community. The focus on inclusivity and practical STEM education is commendable, inspiring students and faculty to engage with the community and introduce children to the possibilities of higher education. This project has the potential to inspire future generations to pursue further education and careers in STEM," the panel noted.
This recognition arrives as universities face mounting pressure to demonstrate public value and address regional skills shortages. ATU Engineering's achievement illustrates how targeted community engagement can simultaneously advance institutional mission, support economic development, and create tangible social impact—a model increasingly relevant as the sector navigates funding constraints and evolving stakeholder expectations.
With 2025's excellence as a guide, the question emerges: which institutions will define the next wave of university-community collaboration? Finalists for the Education Awards 2026 will be announced on 12 February 2026 ahead of the awards gala which takes place on 16 April 2026 at the Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath.
