Ireland’s National Skills Council is calling for AI to become a core part of the education system, not just an add-on. Its strategic advice urges training to focus on areas where AI enhances human capability rather than replacing it, positioning the workforce to innovate rather than react. The council warns that embracing AI is critical to Ireland’s competitiveness, citing potential gains of €1.8 billion to GDP and 14,000 new jobs annually if digital innovation matches OECD levels. Recommendations include creating a National AI Skills Summit, establishing a national skills observatory for labour market insights, and giving employers a formal voice in shaping training fund allocations. A national training voucher scheme for SMEs is also proposed to drive upskilling. This is a call to rethink education as infrastructure for national resilience in an AI-driven economy.
