The Higher Education Authority published its call for proposals under the new Shared Island Digital Creative Industries Innovation Programme on 16 October 2026, opening a welcome opportunity for the education sector. The programme carries an overall allocation of 10 million euro for 2027 to 2030, made up of 4 million euro from the Shared Island Fund and 6 million euro from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. It will help higher education institutions across the island strengthen research and innovation capacity in disciplines relevant to the digital creative industries through cross-border partnerships, which makes it an encouraging moment for ambitious teams.
This is a timely and constructive invitation to build partnerships that combine academic strength with commercial relevance. Three themes make it especially attractive for institutional leaders: the disciplines covered are growing and closely linked to industry and employment, the programme rewards collaboration at scale, and the timetable gives well-prepared teams a clear and achievable path to success. Each is a reason for optimism.
The disciplines are a natural fit for forward-looking institutions. The announcement names digital design, gaming, immersive technologies and digital content creation, areas where research excellence, creative practice and learning technologies increasingly meet. Institutions with strong studios, labs and industry relationships in these fields are well placed to develop bids that show real academic depth and clear commercial value to potential partners and funders alike.
Collaboration sits at the heart of the programme. Funding is designed to enable cross-border partnerships and networks that bring together complementary expertise, infrastructure and capabilities across higher education institutions on the island. It is administered by the HEA through a competitive process, building on the success of the North South Research Programme, and it complements the 750 million euro INSPIRE Research Infrastructure and Talent Programme, which strengthens the wider research environment across the island.
The timetable rewards thoughtful preparation. The call document sets out objectives, eligibility requirements and assessment criteria, the application portal opens in the coming weeks, and applications close at 12.00 noon on 15 December 2026. Successful projects are expected to be announced in early 2027, giving selected teams a full programme period to build lasting capability and industry links, with time to plan and deliver thoughtfully.
Three actions follow for institutional leadership. First, begin partnership conversations now, pairing institutions with complementary strengths and inviting digital creative industry organisations to shape the project from the outset. Second, study the call document closely and map each proposed project against its objectives and assessment criteria before drafting. Third, build student success into the design, with studio placements, live industry briefs and graduate pathways so that learners benefit directly from the collaboration.
The programme offers Irish and Northern Irish institutions a constructive route to deepen industry engagement and showcase education innovation. Educational leadership that assembles strong partnerships early, and presents them with clarity and ambition, can turn this call into a lasting platform for education excellence in the digital creative sector, benefiting students, institutions and industry partners together.
